Tai Lu, The Magical Siamese Cat

Tai Lu first appeared as a comic strip in the children’s publications, Robin and Robin Annuals, in 1953. She appeared until 1957.

This loving Siamese cat was so well-liked she became the protagonist of children’s illustrated books.

There were several books about her, including Tai Lu Talking, Tai Lu’s Birthday Party, and Tai Lu Flies Abroad. In the stories, she has adventures with other cats, but she is the only Siamese.

In 1952, the Luntoy company manufactured a figurine of this lovely Siamese cat. In 1955 she was turned into a stuffed toy by Merrythought, a toy company best known for its teddy bears – this is a collector’s item because Merrythought doesn’t make them anymore. Unable to compete with mass imports, the company now only produces special editions.

The more famous of the team of two writers was Shelagh Fraser, a prolific actress in film, television and theater. Her ‘co-writer’ was Billy Thatcher, who also appeared in the theatre, films and tv and also wrote plays.

Some first editions of the books are available, but few will be in ‘fine’ condition. These were children’s books, after all, and finding a pristine copy with dust cover intact is highly unlikely – and worth buying, if you’re a collector. The Annuals are collected and you’ll have to pay a premium for these if they are in good condition.
