Siamese Kitten Buying Traps -
how to read between the lines and avoid buying an inferior Siamese kitten.

Siamese kitten buying traps are to be found everywhere! Newspapers, vets, shop ads, cat magazine and websites - how do you get behind the possible hype and deceit when trying to buy a Siamese kitten?

Don't make a mistake and find yourself buying a kitten from the wrong source.

Unfortunately there are some people out there who don't have the welfare of the cats in mind. Sometimes this is just ignorance but sometimes it is greed. If you don't have a personal recommendation from somebody you trust then you need some pointers to read between the adverts lines before making the first phone call.

I realise that these are generalizations but they might help you get a feel for the person selling the kittens and steer you away from the kind of Siamese kitten buying traps that I hope this article will keep you away from.

Be careful when replying to newspaper or free ads and postcards put up in shops. They might be fine but they might also be used by somebody not producing pure breed cats but charging pure breed prices.

On the one hand you might find breeders belonging to a good cat club, with great pedigree kittens, selling kittens at the proper age (around 12 weeks) and with their first injections.

Or you might find just the opposite. You might be buying kittens too young to leave their mum, or you might not even be able to see the mum. The kittens might never have been given a clean bill of health from the vets. The pedigree papers might be in the post and the kittens might be one of almost hundreds they have available. Also it has to be said that the breeder might be less choosy about the new owners of their kittens if they are advertising in the free ads!

Cat magazine ads contain some of the most successful progeny of the champions from the cat shows. Remember that not all the resulting kittens will be just like the parents, in the best of health and of the best temperament. There are no guarantees but at least you are more likely to find a professional and more knowledgeable cat breeder here.Don't let your guard down though because Siamese kitten buying traps can still be found here!

If any of the adverts from places like newspapers, free ads, cat magazines or the websites are like this though beware! These are common siamese kitten buying traps. Cat breeders that 'specialise' in a large number of breeds, and seem to have a large number of kittens available at any one time. Nobody can care properly for large numbers of kittens and therefore probably have to keep them in cages. If they are not underfoot and getting used to normal home noises and handled frequently the kittens will be poorly tamed, anxious and scared. This type of kitten grows into a problem cat, this is not your dream kitten and this type of breeder should not be encouraged.

These are also the places where they also have older cats for sale. Why is this? Perhaps the older cat proved to be sterile and no good to breed from or perhaps the resulting kittens had genetic problems like cleft palette or born deformed. Whatever the reason it indicates to me that they are discarding the cats once they are no use to them for whatever reason. This is perhaps one of the less nice parts of cat breeding but something you must consider if you decide to become a cat breeder. Obviously if you only keep a small number of breeding cats it is much easier to look after the ones that don't make the grade, anyway don't they love their cats like we love our pets? These are the things that might make you want to take extra care if you find out they have some older cats for sale, should we encourage this type of breeding set-up.

You will also find plenty of ads at the vets. Usually vets are not able to give a recommendation but they might give you a hint, and sometimes the reception staff are a little more forthcoming. The fact the card is up in the vet's office at least means the breeder takes the cats and kittens to the vet, a good sign! Also it would seem the breeders are hoping to attract a better kind of owner, one who is looking in the vet's in the first place.

All the same criteria above apply to website ads. However please don't judge breeders by their web talents - you'll see some pretty awful websites out there, with bells and whistles and probably more. Instead check out all the Nav Bar information they have on the site and the photos and see if you discover any problem areas that we talk about on this page, a website is really just a large advert for the breeder.

Here's what I would be looking for: I would like to see lots of information about the breed and about the way they bring up the kittens. The fact that they vet prospective owners of their kittens should be seen as a good sign. So is a refusal to sell kittens under the age of 12 weeks. Another great sign is the breeder's willingness to take back the cat or kitten if things don't work out.

Take a good look at their photos. The stud cat should be in a large clean caged area, but it isn't normal to see the mother and kittens in a cage. It's also nice to see other family members photographed with the kittens and the kittens obviously enjoying a stimulating environment. You might also prefer not to buy from a Siamese breeder that does nothing but concentrate on wins at cat shows. It is only normal to be proud of your wins, but you ideally want to see much more on the site than ribbons and rosettes!

Good luck with your search! Remember, your perfect new kitten is out there. Hopefully these Siamese cat buying tips will make the new owner to be into a seasoned kitten buying expert. Forewarned is forearmed when wading through Siamese kitten buying adverts.
