Siamese Cat Temperament: Can you or they handle more than one?

The Siamese cat temperament is one of sharing - with it's own. It usually likes to curl up with a little brother or sister, and when they do that they are unbearably adorable. Remember though a Siamese is still a cat albeit an unusual colored one. All cats are more inclined to live an independent lifestyle than in a pack. They don't live a completely independent life though because in the wild feral cats can live in a loose knit community coming together for kitten care and mating rituals. So, cats that have to share a space can...

  • Enjoy the companionship of another cat greatly and will always be found together. A relationship made in Heaven.
  • Be indifferent to another cat, why did you bring that thing home look!
  • Actively fight another cat and show territorial behavior like spraying. 'Who you looking at? spit, hiss growl!
  • Become so fearful of another cat that neurotic symptoms appear and you have to alter the living arrangements so that the fearful cat has a good quality of life either through separation (different parts of your house) or re-homing. Really tough on you emotionally.

There are many things you can do to deal with the Siamese cat temperament and safely introduce your cats and very importunately to remove areas of conflict and friction before they become an entrenched problem but if you are really unlucky then you will be facing the re-homing option. Just be prepared for more work on your part in playing cat psychiatrist, you do have two or more little Siamese hearts and souls to help out.

So what part does the Siamese cat temperament play when you have a two or more cat family? Truthfully your Siamese could fall into any of the above catagories but in my experience Siamese and their close relatives the part Siamese seem to have a greater need to curl up together than other cats. They also I believe seem to enjoy and need a close relationship (does not always have to be totally harmonious) to others of their kind

.

Put bluntly the Siamese is one of the most social of the cat breeds, so with a bit of luck and a little work on your part your Siamese should form a beautiful bond together. However as the Siamese cats in rescue pounds described as needing to go to a single cat household prove they also have a risk of taking a dislike to other cats! Talking about rescue cats, sometimes a pair or more become available from the same home. By talking with the foster carers you will already know if they get along together a bonus if you are looking for an instant larger cat family.

Please don't be put off, knowledge is power in coming out on top of the Siamese cat temperament game, most of us don't have any problems with our Siamese, we just love talking about their special ways. It is better to be forewarned about the possible issues of your breed choices , perhaps your idea of a perfect cat does not include some of the aspects of the turbo charged Siamese kitten. If you would prefer a more 'docile' and less demanding natured cat (your life is just to busy) you might prefer to turn your attention towards the fluffy Persians. Only you can decide what is your ideal type of cat, choosing a cat in a way is a little like choosing a friend or partner. Mistakes can be made but a little care, soul searching and planning boosts the odds in your favor!

There is nothing so cute as a bundle of contented Siamese stretched out together beside the fire or radiator. So go on, if you are able why not buy more than one!
