Why not a Siamese Cat Rescue?

Siamese cat rescue, like any cat rescue, is filled with really dedicated people whose efforts range from trying to 'save' domestic and feral cats, running neutering operations and returning cats back to their feral colony and to the organisations that 'save' pure breed cats.

What they have in common is the desire to offer a safety net to cats that find themselves at risk.

This work has become even more vital as people suffer from an economic downturn. It is a sad fact that every day thousands of healthy but unwanted pets are euthanized.

Although this is a Siamese cat site and there are Siamese cat rescues, if you have the space and the money to give a home to one of these rescue house cats I am sure they will give you back plenty of love. I have both in the past and now had the pleasure of sharing my time with some great cat characters this way.

The downside? Well, the cats are probably grown up so you miss out on that fun kitten stage. They are set in their ways and you might have quite a bit of training to do before they 'fit in' to your home. Some have also not had a good life and are very shy. You might never have a lap cat, and feel honored if they are in the same room as you!

These are the cats that disappear for hours under things if anybody visits or calls at the door. If you have the experience or time to learn, then a rescue cat can be very special. An older cat often available for Siamese cat adoption might not want much more from life but to decorate a sunny window sill, and enjoy food on demand.

These cats up for Siamese cat adoption are not to be considered if you are very short of money and hope to get a cat cheaply. All rescue organizations check you out to see if you are suitable and charge a fee to cover the vet expenses like spaying, vet checks and feeding.

If you're looking for volunteer work most cat rescue centers will welcome you with open arms. The work can be emotionally draining and you will probably end up with an extra cat or two but you will meet some great people. There are worse things to volunteer for!

And you will have a great outlet for actually doing something rather than just getting upset when you read the cruelty stories in the press.

If you're just too busy at the moment but have the skills or money, there are plenty of other ways to help: regular donations, help with their website, field press interviews and write up stories for the local media. It is not all about picking up scratching hissing cats that have absolutely no intention of being rescued!

Now, back to the Siamese Cat Rescue.

Many rescue cats might look like Siamese cats but may only be part Siamese. Nothing wrong with that but better to be forewarned if this is not what you want. You might also find any of the Oriental mixes.

You may find that the cat breed clubs are actively involved in trying to find good homes for the Siamese cats that have been brought into this world and are now on hard times. However, Siamese cats have a certain reputation for being more of a handful than many other cats and rescue cats certainly prove this.

Sometimes these Siamese cats have been given up because they cannot be housed with other cats due to aggression or fear. That might not matter if you only want one cat but less so if you fancy having a larger cat family in the future. Sometimes they have been handed in because they have health issues and the owners either cannot afford the vet fees of perhaps the nursing that this cat needs every day. On occasion they may have come from a breeder who has not looked after them very well or kept them in cages and used them as breeding machines.

And sometimes they have other baggage, like spraying indoors and peeing on everything. There are many reasons for this spraying behaviour and there is help out there - first you must take the cat to a vet to make sure there is no medical reason for this problem.

As you can see, choosing the Siamese cat rescue or Siamese cat adoption route may be complicated but is well worth the effort, especially if you're a seasoned cat owner able to deal with most problems that could arise.

The rescue organizations of course try to match the cat to the person and are there to help you should you have problems with your new cat. Not all the cats are difficult and some are only at the shelter due to family breakups or bereavements.

So you'll find all types of cat at a Siamese cat rescue - some difficult, some anti-social, and some perfectly loving and friendly. Some may have had a hard life and have the capacity to love you even more than a cat who has never known anything but luxury!

To start you off on your Siamese cat rescue search, here are a few addresses:

(A UK based Siamese rescue)
(A UK based Siamese rescue for the North of England)

(A huge US based clearing house of Siamese adoption and rescue organizations from across the US - a great place to start your hunt or search for a volunteer opportunity)

You'll also find plenty more like these by searching the web for 'cat rescue' followed by your locality.

There are - unfortunately - plenty of organizations out there.
