The Siamese Cat Personality: Do you have the right personality for a Siamese?

  • You really love cats and are a patient, laid back character? Your Siamese cat personality will try your patience on a regular basis.

  • You have plenty of time - and the inclination to spend it with your Siamese? They won't be fobbed off with a quick stroke, and you don't want to upset your Siamese, now do you.

  • You have a job that allows you the luxury of not leaving your Siamese for long stretches of time?

  • You have no other cats or if you do they aren't particularly territorial? Many Siamese are quite dominant and some can even act like little bullies.

  • You have the space to provide your Siamese with special nooks and crannies to retire to? Although Siamese of all breeds like to curl up together, keeping too many cats in one place can cause unhappiness, emotional problems and undesirable behaviors like fighting and spraying.

Siamese cat personality: Siamese-proofing your home

  • You are able to provide a safe place for your Siamese? Your cat would love some fresh air and sunlight but you'll have to provide a totally enclosed garden, terrace or balcony. Siamese are very clever and inquisitive so you'll have to take special care they don't escape and risk falling, running into traffic, or into other animals, both wild or pets.
  • That safe place includes your home, especially if you leave your cat alone for several hours. They will get bored and find their own entertainment. Electrical cables can be played with or even chewed through. It's that complicated clever Siamese cat personality again!
  • More indoor plants that you could imagine are deadly poisonous to cats. Your Siamese cat personality is such that they have to check everything out and that includes a little nibble or three.
  • Some Siamese have a wool fetish: they eat wool and that can cause an emergency visit to the vet. Nobody is sure why they do this but sucking on dangerous things often happens when kittens are taken away too early (before 12 weeks) from their mum, brothers and sisters.
  • You are not especially house proud? Siamese have claws that don't seem to retract completely so you might find traces of them on your furniture. Even with plenty of scratching posts around the house they often seem to think scratching things to provoke a reaction from you is great fun. Please don't even think of declawing them. This is a terrible thing to put your cat through, not just because of the pain they suffer but because your cat will be defenseless and unable to climb out of the way of danger.
I have a problem with my Siamese because like many of his breed, orientals included, he often stands up when using his litter box. It is amazing how high the sides have to be to keep everything inside the box! Don't assume that those covered trays will solve this: make sure you check the join between the top and bottom section. You will also have to keep a covered tray really clean because any odors are trapped within and your cat has a much more sensitive nose than you do.

  • You have a sense of humor? You'll need it. It's not that Siamese are deliberately naughty, but they can be trying. They're actually quite often clumsy for cats, on purpose. They will knock things over just to get your attention. So either be prepared to put valuables behind glass, hide them away or just resign yourself to the minimalist look.
  • You enjoy a forceful cat that will want cuddles on demand? Or who might even give you the cold shoulder at other times? Can you cope? They are not easy to fool (another Siamese cat personality trait) and trying to force them to do what you want just will not work. They love a challenge and the spoils of winning.

Sensitive? Siamese are sensitive? For all their brashness and devil-may-care attitude, deep down inside they're sensitive little souls. They are keenly aware of emotional currents and worry if things don't feel right at home. So take the time to talk and share with your cat, even if it seems silly! They at least seem to understand the feelings you're sharing, if not the words. The fact that you take the time to be close with them counts a lot and they will be reassured that things are all right in their world.

Siamese cats can be a little zany and may contribute at times to raising your blood pressure - at least that's been my experience. Chasing a lizard around the bedroom comes to mind, as does gashing my sofa just to get noticed.

But if you can provide most of the things on the list you will have a very special time with your Siamese. They will charm you with their endearing ways and love and you will never be without a Siamese or two in you life ever again.
