Siamese Cat Breeders Checklist
You are welcome to send the Siamese Cat Breeders Checklist to anybody you wish, it is very useful for anybody thinking of buying a Siamese kitten. If you know how to choose a Siamese and have made a short list of Siamese cat breeders, the next stage will be to ask a number of questions. Why? It will save unnecessary visits and time wasting and it is much easier to walk away from people (and their kittens) you don't care for on the phone or via email rather than in person. You could also take this Siamese cat breeders checklist with you when you go to a cat show. Using this siamese cat breeders checklist should stop you making expensive and sometimes sad mistakes. - How many kittens are available? You might not want to make the journey if only one kitten is left and you have no choice.
- Which sex are they? You might already have a preference.
- Try not to fire too many questions at them; they hopefully will answer lots of your questions without you having to ask if they are knowledgeable cat breeders.
- What colour points do they have?
- How old are they? When will they let them go? Remember, no self-respecting breeder should release kittens before they are around 12 weeks old so they'll have their first vaccinations and vet's visit, not to mention decent socialization skills.
- Have they been vaccinated? With which vaccines? They will also have to be free from 'cat AIDS', or FIV. The vet will have done these blood tests and confirmed that they no not have these diseases.
- Can I see their mother and father? It's good to see both parents because if they are both friendly and outgoing then their kittens are likely to be the same. (Not all breeders keep stud male cats for various reasons but they should be able to tell you about the stud they visited with their female and might have used him before so they know whether the kittens are bomb proof or more shy.)
- Do they have pedigree papers or are they 'pets'? Pets could be cheaper but if you want to show your cat then it's imperative that the papers are in order or you wont be allowed to. Also they should provide pedigree papers even for pet quality Siamese. You want to be sure that it is a pure Siamese after all!
- Are they in the house? You want to hear that they are not shut up in a room or worse, a cage. They have to be used to all the usual household noises as well as regular human handling.
- Does the kitten come with any health guarantee? (Some breeders insure kittens for 6 weeks from the day you take them home. Although this does not remove the heartache of a sick or diseased kitten, you will at least not be financially out of pocket with huge vet bills added to the cost of your new kitten.)
- How much do they cost? This will prevent a nasty surprise once you've chosen your kitten. Are there any additional charges?
- Do they need cash? Will they take a cheque?
So thats the Siamese Cat Breeders Checklist! hope this was useful to you. If you like the sound of the breeder on the phone, make an appointment (not everyone is available all of the time) and get some good directions and a street address if you have a GPS. Bring a secure cat basket with something comfortable and absorbent in it if you believe they have a suitable kitten immediately available. Don't be disappointed if you have to wait a few days or weeks though before you can collect your new kitten. If you don't like the sound of them, just tell them that you have other breeders to phone and will call them back when you have spoken to them all. Or, be honest but give a polite reason for not viewing, and thank them for their time answering your questions. This is why the siamese cat breeders checklist is so useful because it saves you so much time. Don't forget to take your digital camera when you visit - you probably wont remember what your kitten looked like and they grow so quickly at this age! You can email these photos to your cat friends and keep the photo with you until you can collect your chosen kitten. NOTE: If you are interested in breeding from your kittens, then I assume you have already done checks on bloodlines, past successes and type qualities of this breeder's stock. If you're not an expert yourself, please think of bringing a knowledgeable friend with you. Also please don't even consider breeding from your kitten unless you have been to a few cat shows and discussed your decision with some of the breeders there.
