Indoor Cats?

Are Siamese cats strictly Indoor Cats?

My answer:

It depends on where they are, and what kind of facilities you have available.

Siamese cats in Thailand are seen outdoors but of course are at risk of the usual bad things all outdoor cats endure. At the same time they enjoy all the pleasures of a natural life, the smells, the anticipation of the hunt, and the lazing in the sunshine that (in moderation) is really healthy for them.

In our countries when we buy a special Siamese we can't all give them a safe outdoors to enjoy. Siamese, like any cat, are quite adaptable and as long as we provide them with things that they might have enjoyed if they had been outdoor cats (minus the mice and birds) then they will have a great life.

If you have the choice then a really well-protected garden, patio or even a balcony would be really appreciated by your Siamese. I feel that it has got to be better for the cat to enjoy the great outdoors and it takes the pressure off you to provide endless entertainment at home. However it must be super cat-proof because the Siamese is clever enough to root out any security weakness!

There are also sadly cases of cats being kidnapped and a pedigree cat is probably more at risk so you will have to decide if the risks outweighs the benefits of allowing your Siamese to enjoy a more natural life.

Siamese don't have a thick double coat of some cats so would not be able to survive in very cold conditions. Also their eyes are supposed to be less sensitive in the dark compared to other cats, so best that they are safely tucked up at home before dusk. My Siamese Cumin has been outside during the recent snowy weather but comes back after a few minutes through the cat flap!

If your cat is to be a solely indoor cat then you will have to provide it with amusement. Raised sleeping platforms, climbing poles, food hidden around the home, window sills with a view and those water feature drinking fountains come to mind. You will naturally have to spend more time playing with your cat so it gets exercise. This way your indoor cat will have a lovely life and you won't have to worry about anything awful happening to your cat.
