Cats are rather like people: they come in many shapes and sizes. A bit like people they range from the almost over-demanding to the downright scary, fearful and yes, on occasion, even unpleasant. Siamese cats have definite personalities!

Unfortunately for us, we may take much less time to choose our eventual cat companions than our human ones. Even if we do choose carefully, some of us have made mistakes.

Here are some things that may happen to you - and yes, some of these things have happened to me, more than once! (but not always with Siamese)

• ‘He just turned up at my door so what was I to do?’
• I inherited her and if I didn't take her then she would be put down.
• They all looked so cute so I picked my favourite-coloured one, the one that reminded me of my first cat.
• I just wanted a (fill in the blank with the colour or breed of your choice).
• Then there is the 'gift cat', however well-meaning. You won't go through the fun of research, dreaming and choosing but the kitten - soon to be cat- is now your responsibility for life.
• He looked so sad and lost in the pet shop.
• It cost us a fortune to bring back the starving cat/kitten we befriended on holiday.
• We went to the local cat rescue and chose her from all the abandoned cats.
• I started volunteering at my local cat rescue and nobody would have taken this cat on!
