British Cat Names: From the Eccentric to the Exotic
If you've come here first, you may have missed all the brilliant British cat names I've prepared for you! Don't worry - I have listed them all at the bottom of the page.
But first, let me tell you the background to these cat names.
So how do I go about collecting cat names?
- I could go to other people's cat names lists and 'borrow' as many as I need. That's not the best way though - this may be a short-cut but a really useful website will have plenty of original material, not just copies. So we'll leave the short-cuts to others.
- I could ask visitors to suggest their own cat names, and more importantly, their reasons for choosing those cat names. And as soon as I get my head around how best to do this, I will!
- Or, start from scratch and research my own cat names. It isn't easy, but believe me, on this site you'll find the real Mc Coy! Authentic, British cat names, UK cat names borne majestically by bona fide British felines.
Where do these names come from? The majority of these names come from the files of a well-respected cattery (boarding cat hotel) located in Hampshire, south of London and very close to the writer Jane Austen's home.
And what's so special about a British cat and kitten name?
We British are known for our eccentricity and this is apparent when it comes to naming our cats and kittens.
- I discovered for example several obviously black cats that had been given white cat names!
- Cats called Mozart, Tolstoy and Descartes probably tell us more about the owners than about the endearing little ways of the cats themselves - although Mozart's owner was a pianist.
- How about these unique cat names - Semtex and Kalashnikov? Apparently the couple's teenage boys named them.
- You'll discover plenty of alcoholic drinks used as cat names and often as twin names for kittens. I once had a cat that was partial to a beer (he would slurp it up when no one was looking). It's not a trait he had as a kitten, or Calico might have been named Newquay or Guiness!
Some names might not mean much to someone who isn't British. Chivers is a popular UK marmalade (a fast food breakfast) spread on buttered toast. Bradford and Bingley - a highstreet building society. You can of course use the same idea from your own country, quite useful if you have two cats to name. Sit-coms and TV stars also feature on the lists, like Cagney and Lacy both popular in the UK and the US, Steptoe and Dell Boy may bring back memories to a British audience. You can do the same with your own favourite programmes and characters. Then there are simple names - no pretension here, like Kitty and Puss. Unimaginative? Not necessarily! These cats are just as loved and special as any and I bet the owners have a great story to tell about their more simple names. So, best not judge! I once had a 'Kitty': her owner was an elderly lady who had to give her up and her grandson was unable to look after her. I became the guardian of an elderly gentle tortie (calico) called Kitty, and Kitty she remained!
