So are all Siamese Alike?

No, even the kittens in a pedigree litter who all look alike will grow up to be quite different - although they will often share some similarities.

How you relate to your cat will also have an effect on the way your Siamese grows up. Imagine the difference between a kitten growing up with just one owner who dotes on his every whim and the cat who is thrown into the excitement and bustle of a family of children.

Even if these kittens were identical, their life experience will lead them down different paths.

I have spoken to Traditional style Siamese breeders who say that the traditional Siamese cat personality is quite different from the modern style. This is hotly debated but seems often true nonetheless.

The modern extreme style can show more character problems but it's not clear why. It is possible that breeding the new sleek shape with extra large ears and an elongated body has introduced health problems. Or perhaps the cat was bred more for looks, with temperament less important. All things considered it would appear that Traditional Siamese breeders would tend to breed for character as well as for looks, but this could well change if Traditional Siamese become too popular and unprofessional backyard breeders enter the fray.

The blue-pointed Siamese do seem to be a little more reserved and sometimes more shy and sensitive, but this is a generalization. Funnily this is something I have noticed with grey cats in general. I have a grey house cat who has many reasons to be the way she is because she had a hard start in life. Her inherent character is on the shy side and she would probably prefer to be in a single cat family (I have six).

I am looking after a feral mum and her two kittens at the moment who will be returned to the wild as soon as they're neutered. One kitten is grey and the other red and yes, the grey one is more watchful and circumspect.

Talking about that red gene, it often belongs to the more fiery individuals, and you might notice your little red point kitten has a little more fire in its little heart and paws as well.

So are all Siamese alike when it comes to the color of their fur? I believe not, but there are plenty of exceptions that confirm the rule.

What about fur length? Does that have an impact on Siamese cat behavior?

There is such a thing as a long-haired Siamese - the Balinese or Javanese - with a luxurious longer coat and full-plumed tail. This cat does seem to be both quieter and more laid back: breeders often call them bomb proof.

But again, there's no guarantee. Ask your breeder about their characters. The breeder has had time to watch them over several weeks since birth and should be able to point you towards the best kitten for you.

All Siamese alike? No, not at all! They might look like two peas in a pod and are known for their strong characters but apart from that, welcome to their world of difference. Just choose one that fits your personality - Siamese are so varied you're sure to find your perfect cat friend.
